Certification for 24-hour use and a bodyweight up to 150kg, built to work around the clock.
The BS 5459 heavy duty standard is the holy grail for serious ergonomic chairs. Each new model goes through continuous testing over 6 months to be awarded BS 5459. For security operations, hospital use, control rooms etc where they are open 24 hours per day, look for BS 5459 certification for peace of mind that the chair will meet intensive use requirements.
The Ergohuman Elite V2 and the original Classic V1 always held BS 5459 heavy duty certification, proving durability and the suitability for 24-hour use environments. This includes being suitable for Body Weights up to 150kg. The new generation of Elite and Luxury models continue this tradition and have been awarded BS 5459 certification.
What is BS 5459 Certification?
The British Standards 5459 test was designed specifically to test chairs for heavy duty applications such as security operations and control rooms where users sit for long hours. The testing involves machinery than simulates repeated cycles of users sitting down, leaning back, getting up etc. Weights of 150kg are used to ensure the chair can withstand repeated cycles under a weight load without breaking or becoming unsafe.
Other tests include stability and safety to ensure a chair cannot tip over and injure the user. Weights are attached to different parts of the chair to ensure that the chair is stable when users shift their weight around.
Overall the tests simulate years of use to verify their durability and strength. The chair must remain fully operational and functional at the end of the testing cycle.
For normal 8 hour applications, you may not need such a heavy duty chair. However knowing that an Elite or Luxury chair has passed this test enables you to trust that an Ergohuman chair is highly durable, safe and that it will handle long term daily use.
Built to last
A good ergonomic chair is an investment that pays off in the long run. With excellent ergonomics to support your body and reduce strain, together with a wide range of adjustments there are daily benefits to an ergonomic chair. Because an Ergohuman chair is built to last supported with BS 5459 certification, you will get years of service from your investment in normal use applications.
How many hours per day can you use an Ergohuman chair?
While an Ergohuman Chair can be used all day in a shift environment with different users, your should not use a chair for more than 8 hours per day for your health and well-being.
The recommendations for optimal health are to stand every 30 minutes and stretch your legs for up to 5 minutes. This helps with blood flow and flexing of your joints.
Tips for healthy working in a desk job
Working a desk for long hours has become normal in today’s work culture. Combined with increased working from home, we are not forced to walk and move s much as we do when commuting to an office. The makes it even more important to engage in activities and routines that make us walk and move more.
Ways you can incorporate moving into your routine can include:
- Using a height adjustable desk
- Using the reline position and legrest if fitted to vary your sitting position
- Standing during phone calls when you don’t need to use a keyboard
- Taking a 30 minute walk at lunchtime
- Making sure your chairs, desk, keyboard position and screen are optimally adjusted.
- Take the stairs rather than an escalator.
In a desk job we spend around 20% of our life sitting at a desk compared to 30% sleeping. You deserve to have a quality ergonomic chair to be comfortable and healthy as much as you deserve a good mattress to sleep on.
